Rui Pinto’s Witness Protection Status Reinstated

Rui Pinto, the Portuguese hacker behind the Football Leaks that launched an investigation into Manchester City, will continue to benefit from witness protection. This decision comes after the Portuguese authorities reversed their prior determination to terminate his protective status, following concerns over insufficient communication on the grounds for its termination.

Pinto, at the forefront of disclosing key documents that highlighted alleged financial misconduct by the Premier League club, had faced the looming threat of losing his protective shield. The Football Leaks revelations, which Pinto shared with the German magazine Der Spiegel back in 2018, provided evidence crucial to uncovering Manchester City’s breaches of the rules regarding financial fairness during the 2009 to 2018 seasons. Despite being found guilty, Manchester City has appealed the charges.

The Ministry of Justice in Portugal stepped in to suspend the removal, arguing that Pinto had not been properly informed or allowed to counter the decision effectively. This reinstatement allows Pinto a ten-day period to review a low-risk safety assessment regarding his ongoing security.

Reacting on social media, Pinto expressed relief over the reversal, thanking Portugal’s Minister of Justice for addressing what he described as a “manifest abuse of power.” Pinto, despite being hailed by some as a whistleblower, faced legal challenges in Portugal. His previous conviction included charges such as unlawful access and attempted blackmail, leading to a four-year suspended sentence.

His first trial took place under significant security, with Pinto donning a bulletproof vest. Earlier in the year, he was cleared of allegations related to unauthorized access to email accounts of several Portuguese sports organizations, including Benfica.

This case has drawn significant attention, linking Pinto’s disclosures to broader conversations on transparency and accountability within major sports leagues. The ongoing legal wrangling underscores tensions between legal systems and the actions of individuals exposing sensitive, potentially damaging information.
