Survivors of 7 October Attacks: Coping with Trauma Three Years Later
Communities in Israel Struggle with Trauma Three Years After Attacks
As the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas approaches, Israeli communities remain gripped by the traumas endured that day. For many survivors, the struggle between moving forward and honoring those lost is a constant battle.
Keith Siegel, one of the individuals held captive, vividly remembers the harrowing details of his time in Gaza. Captured alongside his wife Aviva, they were among 251 hostages taken during one of Israel’s darkest days, characterized by a succession of assaults on various locations including military bases and cultural gatherings.
The siege resulted in over a thousand fatalities, predominantly civilians, with records indicating that children were amongst those lost. The surprise element of the attacks left Israeli security forces initially overwhelmed, exacerbating the magnitude of the tragedy.
In the poignant silence of Nir Oz’s cemetery, recent headstones stand as grim reminders of the lives stolen. Particularly heart-wrenching is a plot dedicated to a family of five, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence. Shlomo Margalit, nearing 89, tends to these graves with the care of someone who witnessed the kibbutz’s evolution since the 1950s.
Margalit’s commitment to his community is unwavering, even as he finds himself without a permanent home, living temporarily in what remains of a fellow survivor’s residence. His friends, pivotal members of the kibbutz, lie among those marked by fresh tombstones.
A Community Devastated and a Kibbutz Overlooked
The attack on Nir Oz highlighted a colossal lapse in defense, with survivors recounting how a small local defense unit fought bravely but ultimately fell. Before any military intervention could take place, the settlement was left exposed to further devastation by Hamas and others.
The trials faced by the Nir Oz region are emblematic of the broader struggles confronting Israel. The wounds from that day of tragedy are not just physical but are etched deeply into the psyche of its people, particularly for individuals like Shlomo who strive to preserve the memory of those lost while looking toward an uncertain future.
To this day, the community grapples with the aftermath, trying to find solace and strength as they rebuild both their homes and their lives.
