Bosnia and Herzegovina Elections: A Shift Towards Nationalism?
Resurgence of Nationalism in Bosnia’s Elections
In the recent general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a discernible shift back to nationalist politics emerged, reflecting broader European trends. Ethnic parties gained traction, particularly in the Bosnian entities of Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where nationalist sentiment overcame civic ideals.
Voters largely aligned along ethnic lines, with significant wins for the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) in Republika Srpska and the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) in the Federation. Darijana Filipovic, representing HDZ BiH, was elected to the presidency, marking a departure from the civic leadership of her predecessor, Zeljko Komsic of the Democratic Front.
Political Landscape Reflects Broader European Trends
Sacir Filandra, a political science professor, noted how these election results underscore a broader European resurgence of conservative forces. He explained, “In times of crisis, conservative and nationalist forces often gain prominence due to widespread insecurity and fear.” The results are part of a global trend where political right-wing sentiments are gaining momentum.
The election did not bring unexpected shifts in voter behavior but rather solidified existing ethnic divisions, according to Filandra. Political parties continue to mirror these longstanding societal splits, reinforcing the status quo rather than promoting reconciliation or significant political breakthroughs.
Implications for the Future
The composition of Bosnia’s presidency now leans more towards ethnic representation, with a balance of nationalist and multi-ethnic representatives. The inclusion of Denis Becirovic from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the Bosniak representative provides some counterbalance to the nationalist outlook brought by Filipovic and the Serb nationalist Zeljka Cvijanovic from SNDS.
Observing how these dynamics will affect governance involves speculation, as coalition negotiations will shape the political agenda. However, the election outcome suggests a period where nationalist rhetoric and policy may take precedence over civic unity and multi-ethnic governance.
