India Launches Operation Amistad to Aid Earthquake-Hit Venezuela
NEW DELHI: In a timely response to the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, India initiated Operation Amistad on Friday to provide crucial support. Two C-17 aircraft from the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been dispatched, carrying a field hospital unit and over 35 tonnes of essential relief supplies.
External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar announced the commencement of the operation via a post on X, stating, “Operation Amistad underway! Two @IAF_MCC C17s took-off today for Venezuela with urgent assistance to support their post-earthquake relief efforts.” He highlighted that the relief efforts encompass an Indian Army @adgpi Field Hospital Unit, along with a substantial amount of medicines and medical equipment, including two innovative BHISHM Cubes.
This operation was launched just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences for the tragic losses endured due to the earthquakes. He expressed India’s readiness to extend all possible assistance to Venezuela in this challenging period.
Support from Venezuelan Leadership
Responding to India’s initiative, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez expressed gratitude towards PM Modi for his messages of condolence and support following the seismic events near Caracas.
Impact of the Earthquake
The earthquake has had a profound impact, with the death toll now reaching 235 individuals and over 4,300 reported injuries, as stated by Health Minister Carlos Alvarado during a press briefing on Thursday evening local time. He reported that emergency services have already treated more than 4,300 injured individuals, noting a mix of minor and severe cases, many of whom necessitated surgical intervention. Sadly, about 235 patients arrived at medical facilities without vital signs.
Details of the Medical Mission
According to the Military, a specialized team of 41 members from the 60 Para Field Hospital has joined the relief mission, comprising nine medical officers. The IAF C-17 aircraft are equipped to provide critical emergency medical care, trauma management, surgical services, and intensive care, carrying almost six tonnes of medical supplies, including humanitarian aid linked to the BHISHM Cube.
The BHISHM Cube represents a significant advancement in modular field hospitals, capable of delivering advanced trauma care, emergency surgeries, and intensive care for as many as 200 patients at a time.
Message of Solidarity
In a heartfelt message directed at the people of Venezuela, the Indian Army reaffirmed their support and solidarity, stating, “Compartimos su dolor. Estamos con ustedes,” which translates to “We share your pain. We are with you.” This response underscores India’s commitment to international aid and humanitarian support during times of crisis.
