Shrewsbury Food Hub Awarded Significant Grant to Battle Food Waste
In a noteworthy development for the fight against food waste, Shrewsbury Food Hub has secured a substantial financial boost. The local charity dedicated to redirecting excess food from supermarkets and farms to those in need has been awarded a £60,000 grant from the Shrewsbury Town Council, offering a lifeline amid increasing operational costs.
The charity, founded in 2016, plays a pivotal role in Shropshire by collecting surplus food and distributing it to over 90 community groups along with 13 regular food share events. Cherry Teearu, a key fundraiser for the hub, expressed immense gratitude for this funding. She emphasized how crucial this amount is in offsetting the rising operational expenses faced by the organization due to the ongoing cost of living crisis.
Operating costs have been a pressing concern for Shrewsbury Food Hub, with annual expenditures nearing half a million pounds. Notably, a significant portion of these funds are allocated to fuel for their delivery vans, maintaining their depot, and paying staff. John Hughes, who oversees logistics, highlighted the relentless nature of their operations, which run seven days a week, almost every day of the year except Christmas.
Last year alone, the Hub successfully intercepted 272 tonnes of food destined for waste, converting this into over 649,000 meals for those in need. Their ongoing efforts not only provide nourishment but also support environmental conservation by reducing overall food waste.
The impact of their work reverberates throughout the community, touching various segments, from mothers and toddlers to low-income families. The Food Hub also serves as an educational bridge, as illustrated by volunteer Peter Hampton’s anecdote about his grandchildren learning and spreading awareness at their school about the issue of food waste.
