Ex-GTA Creator’s Studio Nears Closure After Game Failure

Studio Faces Possible Closure After Debut Game Disappointment

Build A Rocket Boy, an Edinburgh-based game development company established by Leslie Benzies, a former key figure at Grand Theft Auto, is on the verge of shutting down. The studio has entered administration after its maiden game, MindsEye, failed to win over critics and players alike.

Launched in June 2025, MindsEye struggled with negative feedback and technical issues. Reports of chaos in the development process and a lack of clear leadership were rife. Former employees have been vocal about their concerns regarding the project’s management, pointing fingers at Benzies for the mishandling.

MindsEye’s Flawed Launch

Following its problematic debut, the studio attempted various updates and fixes to engage players, yet these efforts have largely fallen short. The adverse consequences were immediate, leading to significant layoffs, affecting between 250 to 300 employees.

In a recent all-hands meeting, Benzies addressed the tumult, suggesting external interference in the game’s release. Despite taking responsibility for the botched launch, no tangible turnaround strategy was put forth to redeem the game’s reputation and performance.

Administration Process Explained

Now under administration, Build A Rocket Boy’s future hangs in the balance. In such situations, an accountant often steps in to manage insolvency proceedings, seeking ways to either find new ownership or liquidate assets. This phase is crucial to potentially saving the company or, at the very least, securing repayments for creditors.

Benzies, who established the company two years after his departure from Rockstar Games amid financial disputes, hoped to transform his vision into a reality with the game Everywhere. Shifting their focus to MindsEye, the team failed to capture the intended success, causing both financial strain and workforce reductions.

The studio’s difficulties reflect losses reported in their latest financial statements, showing a substantial deficit. As stakeholders await further developments, the potential for complete liquidation looms if no solutions are found.
