India Opens Its First Victim Rights Centre in Patna
The Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, is set to inaugurate a groundbreaking facility for crime victims in Patna today. The new Victim Rights Centre, located at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority, represents a pioneering step in delivering comprehensive support to victims across the nation.
This Centre is designed as a pilot project by the Bihar State Legal Services Authority, aiming to centralize assistance and streamline the support process for victims so they no longer face the frustration of bouncing between different offices. This approach is expected to prevent the repeated retelling of traumatic experiences to various authorities, which has been a common issue in the traditional system.
The operational model of the Centre includes a single-window system where victims can access information about their legal rights and receive a wide range of support services. Upon contacting the Centre, victims’ cases will be assigned a unique Victim Case Number, ensuring that there is a cohesive and continuous record of their case. The assistance offered by the Centre spans legal, medical, financial, psychological, and rehabilitation needs.
The legal support provided will start from the filing of an FIR, proceeding through stages like bail, trial, and appeal. Additionally, victims will find help with filing for compensation, obtaining emergency medical treatment, and accessing witness protection services, if necessary. This ensures that they have legal and practical support throughout the judicial process.
Apart from legal and procedural aid, the Centre will also focus on holistic well-being by offering psychological support and counselling. For cases requiring extended support, victims will have access to resources for shelter, education, skill development, and livelihood opportunities. The initiative embodies an inclusive approach to victim welfare, promising to be a model for future projects across the country.
This significant development in Patna marks a vital turning point in how victims of crime are assisted and supported in India, paving the way for enhanced victim rights and improved access to justice.
