In the wake of JoAnn Fabrics’ unfortunate bankruptcy in 2025, devoted crafters are rallying to recapture the sense of community the chain once provided. The company, cherished by many small business owners and hobbyists alike, fell victim to the tumultuous impacts of private equity management, leaving loyal customers and local businesses in search of a new anchor.

Founded in Cleveland by German immigrants in the 1940s, JoAnn Fabrics blossomed from a humble shop into an 800-store behemoth, becoming a cornerstone for wedding dress designers, upholsters, and various artisans. Its closure left a palpable void, not merely for its vast array of products but for its role as an inspirational hub for creators.

Now, fans are spearheading a grassroots movement to establish a cooperative that mirrors JoAnn’s fundamental values, minus the corporate pitfalls. Leading this initiative is Sandy McClenahan, an advocate who believes in forming a network that would support and connect crafters nationwide. McClenahan recently garnered interest by circulating an online survey, rallying broad support from across the United States for a member-owned cooperative model.

A New Model for an Old Community

The proposed cooperative aims to go beyond merely supplying fabric and craft materials. The vision includes preserving the unique skills cherished by local business owners while fostering an environment resistant to the destructive tendencies of corporate profiteers. This move towards cooperatives is part of a larger trend in the United States where consumers and workers seek greater ownership and agency in their economic engagements.

Julie Bosland of the Cooperative Development Foundation emphasizes that unlike traditional corporations, these cooperatives reinvest profits into the community, aligning the business’s growth with the well-being of its members. This model isn’t new; it’s rooted deeply in American enterprise history and sees renewed interest as people seek alternatives to impersonal consumerism.

Significant growth in US worker-backed cooperatives is a testament to this shift. From 2014 to 2024, these ventures grew over twofold, illustrating a mounting preference for business structures that democratize economic control. This trend aligns with recent legislative measures that ease the formation of employee-owned enterprises, suggesting a promising future for cooperative-based models.
