Trump and Xi Engage in High-Stakes Talks on AI Leadership
As the global race to dominate artificial intelligence heats up, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently met to discuss their respective countries’ AI ambitions. Both leaders view AI as a cornerstone of technological supremacy and economic power.
Trump has openly acknowledged his perspective, stating his intent for the US to outpace China in AI advancements. Xi, although less vocal, has steered China into accelerating its efforts to lead in the AI arena. US AI Superiority Challenged by China’s Rapid Developments
The US holds a leading position in developing cutting-edge AI models, with companies like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI setting benchmarks globally. An AI model from China’s DeepSeek briefly equaled a top US model, narrowing the gap between the two superpowers. Despite Trump’s focus on safeguarding US interests against perceived Chinese AI advances, financial investments in US AI companies remain a significant factor in maintaining this technological lead.
China, however, continues to rapidly develop AI technologies. Despite US restrictions on advanced microchip sales, Chinese firms release new AI models frequently, challenging the notion of US dominance. Beijing’s unique strategy involves the proliferation of open weight models, which are more adaptable and accessible compared to the proprietary models favored in the US.
China’s Strategy for AI and Economic Leverage
While the US pushes for cutting-edge developments, China’s approach focuses on widespread AI deployment across industries. Open weight models, like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, play a crucial role in this strategy, enabling adaptability and broader usage.
Lizzi Lee from the Asia Society Policy Institute highlights how, even without leading at the frontier, China can gain significant geopolitical and economic leverage through accessible AI technology. The country is strategically positioned to leverage its energy resources to support AI’s high energy demands, further solidifying its position in the global AI hierarchy.
